Performances and transcriptions of jazz standard melodies featuring renowned jazz violinist Tim Kliphuis (Rosenberg Trio, Fapy Lafertin, Angelo Debarre, etc...).

When melodies are notated in lead sheets, they are often written in a simple way; both melodically, and rhythmically. It is standard practice, however, in jazz, to embellish the melodies. This can be done to varying degrees, and the possibilities are endless. In this free lesson, Tim Kliphuis demonstrates a typical authentic jazz violin approach to interpreting melodies.

An in-depth study on harmony and accompaniment on the violin.

The violin is traditionally used as a melodic instrument; as such, harmonic confidence is generally a weak point for most fiddlers. This lesson series expands upon the concepts covered in the two Tim Kliphuis instructional videos (Hot Jazz Violin Vol.1 and 2) published by HyperHip Media.

In this first volume of Jazz Violin Harmony & Accompaniment, instructor Tim Kliphuis guides the student through a series of arpeggio exercises in order to build a solid harmonic foundation for accompaniment.

He demonstrates these concepts on both, a minor song, and a major song, respectively.

Summary of the lessons:

  • Understanding and interpreting the harmonic structure of a song
  • 5 arpeggio exercises to build harmonic confidence
  • Basic voicings for major and minor triads and dominant chords
  • Basic extensions used in jazz
  • Basic right hand technique for accompaniment
  • Basic turnarounds

The main performance examples are meticulously transcribed in PDF notation, and lessons include detailed analyses of each concept.

Once the student has mastered these concepts, he/she should be able to use this knowledge on almost any other common jazz standard.

Backing tracks and extra mp3 support material are included in this lesson package.

Recommended prerequisites:

  • Understand the theory behind basic chord formation: major, minor, and dominant chords
  • Be able to transpose
  • Be able to improvise over changes at a basic level

Volume 2 of Jazz Violin Harmony & Accompaniment picks up where volume 1 ended. By now, the student should have a solid understanding of basic harmony; he/she should be able to apply all the concepts covered in volume 1 on most popular jazz standards.

In this second installment, instructor Tim Kliphuis guides the student through more adventurous harmonies through the use of passing chords. Whereas the first volume focused on building harmonic confidence, the focus of volume 2 is on actual accompaniment.

Topics covered:

  • Passing chords and extensions
  • Gypsy Jazz rhythm
  • Mainstream Jazz rhythm
  • Bongo Rhythm
  • Freestyle accompaniment
  • Bowing techniques
  • Pizzicato techniques

This lesson package includes support material in the form of PDFs and mp3s, as well as backing tracks for your convenience.

Prerequisites:

  • All the concepts covered in Vol.1 of Jazz Violin Harmony & Accompaniment

The goal of the "In The Style Series" is to give you this access, as much as possible, in the comfort of your own home!

About Paulus Schäfer:

Paulus Schäfer (born 1978) is today one of the most talented Gypsy Jazz guitarists from The Netherlands. Born into a Dutch Sinti (Gypsy) community he learned to play the guitar at a very early age. Besides listening to fellow Sinti and records of his idol Django Reinhardt, it was Wasso Grünholz – a legend within the Sinti community – and his nephew Stochelo Rosenberg from whom he learned the most. After a short period of time, in which Paulus briefly took over the lead guitar of Jimmy Rosenberg in the Gipsy Kids, he formed the Paulus Schäfer Gipsy Band and recorded his debut album “Into the Light” in 2002, followed by many concerts and numerous – headlining – invitations to jazz festivals: Sziget Festival Budapest (H), Khamoro Prague (CZ), IGGF Gossington (UK), Django Reinhardt Festival Samois-sur-Seine (FR), Gipsy Festival Anger (FR), International Gipsyfestival (NL), Amersfoort Jazz (NL), Haarlem Jazz (NL) to name a few.

Being a musician on high demand, Paulus is often to be found on stage with other musicians like The Rosenberg Trio, Biréli Lagrène, Stochelo Rosenberg, Fapy Lafertin, Jimmy Rosenberg, Tim Kliphuis, Feigeli Prisor, Andreas Öberg, Olli Soikkeli, Gonzalo Bergara etc. and can be found on many albums. He also recorded two more albums with his own group in 2006, ‘Desert Fire’ and ‘Live at the NWE Vorst’ with the Paulus Schäfer Gipsy Band and The Tilburg Big Band. In March this year he released “Twelfth Year”, in which he guaranteed the assistance of Tim Kliphuis, Nous’che and Stochelo Rosenberg. Two more albums are in preparation this year.
Paulus has a particular sound, easy recognised, and although all Paulus’ albums are true to a distinctive Gipsy Jazz/Swing sound; Paulus is always looking for a new modern sound. Not only to broaden his own horizons, but also for a more representative Gipsy Jazz sound for the 21st century.

About Jason Becker:

Jason Becker is an American rock guitarist and composer. At the age of 16, he became part of the Mike Varney-produced duo Cacophony with his friend Marty Friedman. They released Speed Metal Symphony in 1987 and Go Off! in 1988. Cacophony broke up in 1989 and Becker began doing solo work, having released his first album Perpetual Burn in 1988. He later joined David Lee Roth's band and recorded one album with him. However, Becker's success was hampered by his then-diagnosed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and he was given three to five years to live. In 1996, Becker eventually lost the ability to speak and now communicates with his eyes via a system developed by his father. Despite his disability, he continues composing by using a computer. Today, he remains one of the most influential rock guitarists in the world.

About Max Dible:

Max Dible is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music where he majored in composition. He has been close friends with Jason Becker for well over a decade and has spent countless hours, alongside Jason himself, documenting Jason's playing style. No other guitarist has had the opportunity to work directly with Jason to fully decipher all the intricacies of Jason's music. The results are presented in DC Music School's In The Style Of Jason Becker lessons.

About Borislav Mitic:

Borislav Mitic is a Canadian rock guitarist who hails from Belgrade, Serbia. He first came to international prominence after being discovered by Mike Varney, and invited to record an album on the legendary shred guitar / rock / fusion label Shrapnel Records (Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, etc..).

"Borislav's Shrapnel recording reveals a guitarist brimming with talent. Although there are many neo-classical moments on this CD, the Serbian guitarist brings more diverse influences into play than the average neo-classical shredder. Borislav is one of the most technically proficient guitarists on the Shrapnel label and this CD more than aptly demonstrates that point." - Mike Varney, Shrapnel Records

About Tcha Limberger:

Tcha Limberger was born in a ‘Manouche’ family with a long-standing musical tradition (his grandfather was the legendary Piotto Limberger). Both his father Vivi, singer and guitar player, and his Flemish mother raised him to understand and appreciate their respective cultures. As a child, Tcha was determined to become a flamenco singer. At age twelve, he started playing the clarinet, joining the family orchestra ‘The Piotto’s’. Meanwhile, he studied the flamenco guitar, but because of a lack of good teachers, he switched to Django-style guitar playing, learning from masters such as Fapy Lafertin and Koen De Cauter. At that time, he worked with ‘Het Muziek Lod’, where he met Dick Vanderharst, who introduced him to contemporary classical music and modern jazz. Tcha’s good friend and colleague, Herman Schamp, exposed him even more deeply to classical music and composing. When Tcha was seventeen, he started studying the violin, inspired by stories on his grand-father and recordings of Toki Horvath. By the time he was twenty-one, he left Belgium for Budapest, where he took classical and tzigane classes from Horvath Bela.

An in-depth practice method for serious improvising musicians with Denis Chang. This lesson also features Will Dickerson on rhythm guitar.

Contains

  • HD video lessons where Denis teaches the importance of foundations for any improvising musician.
  • Includes PDF with relevant examples notated.
  • Approximately 90 minutes of in-depth instruction!

About:

These lessons are for musicians of almost any genre interested in studying improvisation. Though some of the examples are guitar specific, many of the lessons apply to any melodic instrument. Understanding many of the concepts covered in this video series is essentially what makes a difference between a guitarist and a "true" musician. One can be a great guitarist but a bad musician. A true musician is connected to his/her instrument. He/she hears what she is about to play and is in control of the music; it is the ear that dictates what one plays, not the instrument.

This is not your typical improvisation lesson where we focus on modes/scales, and arpeggios. Instead, the primary focus is strictly on the basics: interpretation, ear training, and timing. There is a tremendous focus on harmony, and training your ears to hear chords and chord progressions. Through harmony, we will learn how to voice lead in order to create melodic improvisations, rather than just playing patterns. We will train our ability to react to any given situation so that we are in total control of the music.

The importance of phrasing and the different kinds of phrasing are thoroughly discussed. Improvisation is more than just playing the right notes, it is also about the timing of these notes, and the placement of phrases. Interpretation also plays a big role in how audiences perceive your improvisation.

If you are interested in any of this and much more, then these lessons are for you!

List of chapters:

  • Introduction
  • Practicing
  • Tone
  • Improvisation & Ear Training
  • Idioms
  • Harmony
  • Voice Leading
  • Tensions
  • Reflex
  • Counterpoint
  • Chord Melodies

  • "Vein" Voice Leading Exercise
  • Timing/Phrasing
  • Phrasing
  • Other Styles Of Soloing

Recommended prerequesites:

  • A strong knowledge of harmony is highly recommended
  • A good command of your instrument
